Advertlets at the World Blogger & Social Media Summit 2011!

After two whole day, seven intense sessions of Panel discussions, the World Blogger & Social Media summit 2011 came to an end! It sure was fun to be given the privilege to be the official blog advertising partner for this year’s summit. Many prominent bloggers and speakers with successful stories and social media case studies were there to share and to help other aspiring bloggers and business men soar to greater heights through maximizing the use of the social media.

Many people has yet to realise the importance of Social Media in today’s world, how it can actually help businesses or even just you and I, to be connected to people from all over the world. It was certainly a joy to witness business moguls from all over the world, sharing about the importance of blogging and social media. Proves that we are on the right track, doesn’t it? So peeps, start blogging now, NOT only is it the IN thing to do now, it is the WAY to bring us all further.

The event started out with an keynote address by Dato’ Seri Utama Dr. Rais Yatim, our current respectable Minister of Information, Communication & Culture. He got the ball rolling with his flamboyant speech about the importance of Social Media today and how with it, we are all connected.

Prominent speakers like Jason Lo, CEO of Tune Talk Malaysia, Azran Osman-Rani CEO of Air Asia X, Terrence Fernandez Senior Editor of The Sun Daily were one of the highlights of the conference. They shared with all about how blogging can reach out to businessmen who are looking to increase their customer base, how social media is the “IT” thing to connect and to establish a good relation with their customers, the legal laws in blogging, and how important ROIs are in blogging. However, the highlight of all, YA Bahagia Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad coudn’t make it at the last minute, unfortunately.

But nonetheless, Advertlets bloggers were up to share their experiences as a blogger and how they feel about blogging. Blogger Josh Lim, was up to share about his achievement as the Founder and CEO of Advertlets. Food blogger, Rebecca Saw talked about her passion for food and what led her ultimately into blogging. Jason Goh aka Smashpop.net, our tech/photographer blogger also talked about his success as a blogger for 8 years. Beauty queen, model, emcee, blogger, Bridgette Liberty Yu shared about how she find blogging helped her career advance further. Last but not least, the sweet, intelligent Crystal Cha aka KLChick shared how blogging helped her open up and not be shy though she was home schooled since she was young.

Here’s some quick pictures of us at the World Blogger & Media Summit 2011!

Larry Crowne and Lulla Man Ticket Giveaway!

The Cinemas. It is probably the most natural lepak-ground for most Malaysians. We have a movie going culture that’s close to ridiculous. I’m talking continuously booked out cinemas-ridiculous.

And you know what? We’re just gonna feed this cinema watching monster!

Usually we’d give away 2 tickets to a movie, but this time we’re gonna up the ante, We’ll be giving FOUR tickets each contestant!

Two movies are coming your way that is totally worth watching. The first is Larry Crown: Starring Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, it’s a story of a middle-aged store clerk who is fired. Drowning in debt and no direction, he now feels like its time for a change. Soon, he falls for his speech instructor. Larry Crowne is a witty comedy about life’s surprises and new beginnings.

The second movie is a little closer to home; Lulla Man is a Thai comedy (which has the most impeccable release date) about 3 married men who go through tremendous lengths to hide their night activities with other women so that their wives don’t find out. However, the wives discover this and team up to seek revenge. This Thai blockbuster is absolutely hilarious from start to finish. If you’re not familiar with Thai comedies, think 80’s and early 90’s Stephen Chow.

So we’re giving away 2 tickets to each movie, through ONE contest.

Le GASP!

So this is what you have to do:

You do a blogpost with the title “I want to win tickets to Larry Crowne and Lulla Man!” embed both trailers and here’s the fun part; you’ll have to write a short passage (or long one if you prefer) answering these questions in 80 words or less – “If you could get a second chance, what would you have done differently in highschool?” and “How do you rekindle a dying relationship?

Geddit? Geddit? Back to school AND giving a relationship a refresh?

The funniest and/or most creative posts win the 4 passes! It’s that simple!

Here’s an example:

“If I could be back in school, I’d secretly install a Jacuzzi and a fridge full of ice-lemon tea on the roof top so I can take a relaxing hour to myself before I face the rush of the LRT back home.”

Your entries must be made in this order:

1) Explain that this post is to win tickets

2) Insert Poster for Larry Crowne

3) Insert youtube video of the trailer

4) Answer the first question

5) Insert poster for Lulla Man

6) Insert youtube trailer for Lulla Man

7) Answer the second question

Submit your entry and you will be walking away with 4 movie passes! 2 passes for each movie. It’s that simple!

The Larry Crowne screening will be on he 13th of July at 9.30pm, Cathay Cineplex e@Curve.

And the Lulla Man screening will be on the 19th of July at 9.30pm, Cathay Cineplex e@Curve.

Ticket collection time starts at 8.00pm. Be there early to collect your tickets for better seating. First come first serve basis.

Do I hear any wedding bells ringing? It was only slightly a month ago, that Prince William and Princess Kate’s wedding was held at a grand scale all the way in England’s Westminister’s Abbey. It was deemed the wedding of the year. But I strongly disagree. I think wedding should be all about the two person who are getting married and every wedding is the wedding of a lifetime. It is after all, the moment when two souls become one.

Every wedding should be about the couples themselves. Every petal of roses up to the choice of wine should spell their names. This very day, is a special day to remember for life. Wine Pairing Dinner @ The Hill Damansara Heights

First and fore mostly, I will have to apologise for the disgusting quality of the photographs I’ve taken. They are sub-par for any decent publication. I here-by give anybody who is reading this legal permission to give me a swift punch in the face if you ever have the misfortune to meet me in person. Actually, a quick pinch on the arm would do (and that’s ONLY on my arm, to you kinky types out there). Also, I’m deeply ashamed to tell you that I got carried away with taking pictures of the food, that I forgot to take pictures of the wine bottles. So now you have permission to punch/pinch twice.

It’s hard to describe wine without sounding like I’ve got a phantom tongue that can taste every molecule, so I’ll put it into similes so that you can kind of see where I’m coming from before you go have some for yourself.

Onward with the wine!

The wine from tonight is all from Cloudy Bay, which is a brand from New Zealand, and any vino enthusiast can tell you, wine from New Zealand is a heavyweight in the metaphorical wine punch-out. In fact, many would argue that New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is the best in the world. Myself included.

As the night starts, the guests were served with Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2010. Very, very smooth drinking fellow. You can tell it’s been produced very well because it isn’t coarse or that it doesn’t have that sudden shout that you’re consuming alcohol. The first contact with your tongue is that it has this gentle and friendly aroma of sweetness (also, not a loud sugar sweet, but more like nectar… from the heavens.) It’s light too; meaning it floats itself inside your palette, very comfortable. Next, when you swirl the wine in your mouth, it transforms into the softest creamy tasting wine! The fruity kind of sweet and it still doesn’t invade your taste buds, it remains delicate and demure. Lastly, you swallow, and it will leave no strong aftertaste, but a silky-esque flavor. Take another sip, and it all starts again. Brilliant.

Our entrée was an Oyster Kaiseki in Half Shell. Now, I know many peple would be cheesed off at the idea of oysters, mainly because of the famed fishy-sea taste, but this, my friend, was something else. Fresh and fragrant, the oyster was prepared with ingredients designed to bring the best out of itself i.e. spring onions, and a dash of Japanese soy sauce. Did I mention the freshness of the oyster? Yes? Well, I’m going to say it again. It was really fresh. Clean, clear, and simple, that’s what makes a good entrée to a meal. Couple that with the Sauvignon Blanc, you get flavors that are so well in tune, there’s almost an entire orchestra in your mouth (I’m thinking something in a C# Major key). The tastes never clash, and you get the elegant mix of sweet and savory tag-teaming your tongue.

The next dish was kind of a roller coaster. Here’s why: It was a Sake, Maguro & Aburo Pozu Sashimi With Garlic Shallot Dressing. In a nutshell it was 3 very well prepared fish in sashimi slices. In order, we had Salmon first, Tuna second, and Butterfish last. And there’s method in this madness, because in that order, the fishes differ in the fat content. Here’s how the ride goes – The Salmon is eaten first, fresh of course dipped into the garlic shallot sauce, you taste the Salmon and it’s accompanying falvours. You sip your Sauvignon Blanc, and all the sensations and flavours (refer to above) come together very pleasantly. In fact the lingering of the fruits and fish taste are so light, you want it again quite badly, but then you move on to the Tuna. Tuna is less fatty than the Salmon, and it was seared on the outside and left raw inside. In steak talk, you could call it rare. So you take the less fatty tuna and put it in your mouth, and instantly, the lingering Salmon taste surrenders to this almost neutral taste and texture that is the Tuna. Not to say that it has no taste, but more like a flavor diplomat, resetting everything, keeping the process of eating going, but lowering the aggression of the Salmon. Again, you swirl some wine in your mouth, and it’s pleasantly neutral. Finally, you have the crème de la crème, the butterfish sitting patiently on in the middle of the plate. Waiting to show off its creamy goodness to you. It is by far the fatty-est fish on the plate and everything has come down to this. As you taste it, your blown away by the flavor. You become the sole authority that this has been rightly named ‘butterfish’. So powerful, so delicious, and you can’t wait to pair this with the Sauvignon Blanc, ‘cause when you do; all becomes right with this world. The crisp-ness of the wine and the weight of the fish feels so right, it’s on par with legends. Samson-Delilah, Romeo-Juliet, and teh tarik-roti canai. It just makes sense.

Then they pull out the Cloudy bay Chardonnay (2007), first to taste it on it’s own. It’s been the swan song for Cloudy Bay for a long time, and good reason too. It’s less of a one-two step taste and more of… Ray Charles. Let me explain, you have this immediate oaky taste that it as charming as Ray Charles himself and you’ve got complementing notes giving the main taste a boost, kind of like the Raylettes. A real showmanship of flavor. A little less subtle about it’s taste than the Sauvignon Blanc, and a little more… punchier, cause it’s got a flare to it. No surprise that it’s well known among the enthusiasts.

So they bring out the next dish to pair with the Chardonnay, and it’s Chicken Breast Rolled With Spinach and Mushrooms, served with a Red Bell Pepper Puree. The trick when it comes to chicken breast is that more often than not, it’s over cooked, leaving it dry and rough. However, the Chef over at The Hill nailed it. I’m talking about moist tender meat with a really good Spinach-Mushroom filling (Please do note that even the ratio of spinach and mushrooms can go wrong if not done well) drizzled with sweet red bell pepper puree. It was like a very well written novel, all the angles were covered, leaving nothing to be unanswered. You got the tender chicken complemented by the fresh veggie flavors from the spinach and pepper puree; you have the creamy mushroom taste going well with the spinach, and you have the puree being friends with everyone. So all that was missing was this smoky flavor that a good Chardonnay would lend itself so well… cue in a sip from Cloudy Bay Chardonnay that was just poured into my glass 5 minutes ago. Not only does it blankets the flavors with it’s oaky taste, but it just changes the dimensions of the flavors. It takes all the tastes and tosses them around again, just for fun. Simply delightful.

The last main of the night was Pan Fried Duck Breast With a Honey Mango Reduction.  Usually, when you have duck it’s bound to be oily and a little too fat, but since this was the duck breast, I have to say, it was done very well. The skin was fried just right and the flesh wasn’t overly fatty. The honey mango reduction was a little too sweet, BUT it was done on purpose to show off the Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir 2008 that it came with.

Oh, did I forget to mention the Pinot Noir? It was a very rounded, unlike the Sauvignon Blanc or the Chardonnay. As with red wines, it isn’t as light and floaty like the whites, but more of a compact heavy flavor to it. You taste the tannin and aging process, which makes this a little more serious tasting. Having said that, it was the perfect partner for the duck. The sweetness from the mango honey reduction surrendered itself to the Pinot Noir, but in a good way. You see, when the sip of the Pinot Noir came into contact with the reduction, the sweetness leveled off and you’re left with this new taste and sensation in your mouth. It no long tasted like mango and honey, but this new mild and sensible sweetness. Think of it in terms of brightness and glare: instead of a blinding flavor, you have a perfect combination of highs and lows, where everything is clear and even.

How could we end the night, without the compulsory dessert? For this occasion, they brought out a Cream Cheese Cake On Flambe dark Cherries. Usually cheese cakes fall into the trap of having too thick of a base, or too thin of a base. I’m delighted to inform you that the base-cream cheese ratio on this was spot on. The cherries and the cream cheese made a fantastic combination of texture and flavor, and it shone the most when you keep in mind that the base did not have too much butter (too much butter is also the arch enemy of cheese cakes, where you get a dry rough sensation when you swallow). The cherries and its compote wasn’t too sweet, and I think a vast majority of you would appreciate that. Instead, it was fragrant and light. The perfect way to end a meal.
