Yvonne has accomplished a stunning list of accomplishments, despite suffering from an extremely rare, painful disease.

Yvonne Foong was only 16 when doctors diagnosed her with a rare genetic disorder called Neurofibromatosis. Others could only observe, as the former athlete and Soprano suffered sudden health deteriorations.

At age 13, Yvonne became deaf in the right and soon had difficulty balancing. The unexpected changes were strange and unbelievable. In the next three years, Yvonne suffered in silence, swallowed the ill-fate and struggled alone. Nobody answered her pleas for medical attention.

Fear had caused Yvonne years of suppression. Few times a day, her weak legs gave in suddenly, spraining her ankles and bruising her knees. Yet the bloody wounds were left to heal without medication.

When she was finally brought to Kuala Lumpur General Hospital in 2002, she could barely walk and had to use a wheelchair. MRI scans revealed a large brain tumour, and several more along the spine.

From then on, Yvonne went through an even tougher road through painful surgeries, rehabilitations, and putting up with apathy among some medical professionals.

To date, Yvonne has underwent 1 spine and 3 brain surgeries. The first two at Kuala Lumpur General Hospital, where she suffered the consequences of reckless doctors. The lack of experience locally also proved unhelpful in treating Neurofibromatosis.

As such, Yvonne is determined to get treated abroad. Her life took another twist upon meeting a kind Neurotologist named Dr. Rick A. Friedman, who did her third surgery for free. It introduced her to better healthcare, and her life became hopeful again.

Another tumour that affected her residual hearing was removed by Dr. Friedman in 2005. To raise the fund, Yvonne together with friends and volunteers sold t-shirts and accessories, and organised fundraising events. For a better quality of life, enduring the challenge was worthwhile.

The fundraiser, HEART4HOPE, is still ongoing today. Many tumours are still growing in Yvonne’s brain, spine, and along peripheral nerves. She require periodic MRIs, expensive doctor consultations, eye examinations, X-Rays, et cetera.

A cluster of tumours were recently found inhibiting her right optic nerve. Local doctors concluded that nothing can be done. An appointment at UCLA has been set in May. She is determined to save her eyesight, and nothing can stop her from believing.

Yvonne Foong is the author of ‘I’m not sick, just a bit unwell.’, to raise awareness for Neurofibromatosis. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree at Segi College.
