Pat Law

This time around, we have Pat Law – The Ad Girl. Chances are, you’re probably seen her work. Maybe it even got you to buy something. This advertising veteran somehow manages to do work for global brands – and maintain an often updated magazine-style blog that bills itself as “your daily office fix”. A must read for those working in advertising and media, and an entertaining read for others. With categories such as “The Design Diva”, “The Advertising Slut”, “The Bitch”, “The Photographer”. “The Social Whore” – there’s something for everyone!
Here’s Pat Law’s bio in decaf mode:
“Pat Lawâ„¢ is an advertising manager who has marketed a range of global brands including adidas, Cadbury Schweppes, Chrysler, Harley-Davidson, Jeep, L’Oréal Singapore, and Royal Salute, to name a few. Pat has since moved to focus in communications within the digital realm, working in a leading digital communications agency specialising in Social Media. Pat also writes for iSh and LOTL International.”
And here’s Pat Law in her own words – full flavoured, rich, strong and uncensored!
In exponential times of today, the Blogosphere is becoming increasing crowded. It rains heavily with determined collective drops of Bloggers eager to flood the Internet with their emotions, expressions, and hundreds of photographs of their pet dog Miffy. In this pouring rain, one particular blogger stands out, quite ironically, with her dry wit. Her name is Pat Law.
Read by leading practitioners in the Advertising, Marketing and Media industries, blankanvas(http://blankanvas.bypatlaw.com) is the brainchild of Pat Law, originally born to serve as her cheaper alternative to therapy. With her unflagging sense of comedy with an added wheeze of sarcasm, it is no wonder her loyal readers deem her blog “like smoking, I can’t kick the habitâ€.
Already featured on a number of world’s most respected portals such as NOTCOT.org and Eatonweb, may we present to you the first ever interview Pat has ever done about her blog, only here on Advertlets.com.
THE NAME BLANKANVAS
A result of not using my spell check when attempting to name my blog “blank canvas†between a conference call with a client and a badly brewed coffee.
ADVERTISING
My way of enjoying my life before I head to hell anyway, for all the vices I have committed in my adolescent years. God bless my mum, for her unconditional compassion and love for me. Besides, one can always make do with better looking people as colleagues. I cannot imagine myself working for any government bodies. I might die prematurely from ugliness.
ADVERTLETS.COM
Supports my terrible addiction to coffee and ridiculously expensive cab rides in such a hassle-free and non-intrusive manner. God knows how much I hate weekly irritating spam from advertising blog engines asking me to join them for some bloody outing. Do I look like I fancy a run with you? Do I look like I can be arsed to celebrate Family Day with a bunch of people I don’t know? I recognize that the Blogosphere is at its infancy stage, but I thought marketeers would be sophisticated enough to realize it’s important to understand the consumer. Invitations that don’t interest me, should NEVER reach my mailbox. I like the fact that Advertlets doesn’t act like a cheap pamphlet distributor spamming all bloggers the way other advertising blog engines do. I appreciate sincerity and honesty in a brand, and its refreshing to see Advertlets deliver that.
BLANKETTES
What I call my loyal readers affectionately. How they stay on my site for an average of four whopping minutes per session is beyond my comprehension, but I appreciate it wholeheartedly. Just in case you are numerically deficient, each session equates to 8 30-seconds TV commercials back to back, by the way. Personally, I don’t think I can endure more than 3 at a go (and I’m in Advertising for crying out loud). So yes, I am deeply honoured.
CONTENT
Like Wallpaper (the magazine), except with a personality. An uncensored, devil-may-care personality.
ARE YOU WAITING TO LOSE WEIGHT?
What you’d expect me to say, if you are one of those who enters an already filled elevator and refusing to butt off when the buzzer goes off. My bitchiness transcends in both the virtual and real worlds.

CUSTOMISED NIKE SNEAKERS
When Nike Japan invited me to design my own pair of NIKE iD sneakers and blog about my experience, I thought they were remarkably brave. First of all, they knew I was and still am, an adidas fan. Secondly, I was left to review my design process without a single guideline. No “please do not mention adidas in any context next to our brand†guideline whatsoever. That is Social Media Marketing at its purest, and dare I say, most effective. And oh yes, I love my NIKE iD kicks to death.
A CULT BRAND TOOK NOTICE
Approximately a month after I blogged about a cult brand called Quiet Hero which sells thought-provoking t-shirts made out of an organic blend of both bamboo and cotton, a pleasant surprise arrived all the way from California. Yup, the kind people from Quiet Hero took notice of blankanvas and decided to give me an exclusive limited edition t-shirt of theirs. Do I feel flattered being possibly the first in the country to have a Quiet Hero t-shirt? Hell yes.
BOOKS
I’m still stuck with Atomised by Michel Houellebecq since three years ago. By contrast, I’m on my fifth graphic novel by Neil Gaiman.
FILMS
Jeuxd’enfants lingers sweetly in my mind. As does Wilde, which I have most recently watched.
MAGAZINES
Female magazines bore me to death, sadly. I much prefer Esquire (UK edition), Details and GQ for company. I like Colors and Monocle too. Helps stimulate the otherwise mundane mind.
MUSIC
All but Country, which I’ll probably play at my funeral so as to wake me up from the dead.
FOOD
Pasta and chicken rice, although not both at the same time.
MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT
Losing out to a 5 year old kid in a car racing arcade game and winning a smirk from him, no less.
PROUDEST MOMENT
I’ll conclude 5 minutes prior to death, I promise.
LAST WORDS
Omniamutantur, nosetmutamur in illis. All things change, and we change with them.
That ends the interview. So, do check out Pat’s blog already. PS: She draws pretty well too:
feel good doing good. And those working in advertising would “totally get this” right here.
